Polruan is the side of the harbour most people look at from Fowey and never actually cross to, which is the whole argument for staying on it. The Pilot House stands above the water with five bedrooms, four bathrooms, a limestone floored boot hall built for wet coats, and a garage holding a table tennis table and a dart board. Ten people and three dogs.
Whilst you take the ten minute passenger ferry across to Fowey for the restaurants and the galleries, your dog has one of the densest clusters of good walking anywhere in Cornwall. The Fowey to Polkerris coast walk starts six tenths of a mile away, Lantic Bay is a mile and a half, and the circular out to Gribbin Head from Par Sands is under two. All three rate an eight with us. St Catherine's Castle is half a mile off, and two pubs, a bakery and the quay are a few minutes on foot.
Outside is a landscaped garden with a secure lawn and a patio, so three dogs can be out there without a lead in anyone's hand. The house has also been laid out with mobility in mind, which pairs better than you might expect with an old dog that has stopped enjoying stairs. Polruan is steep in every direction, so that matters here more than it would elsewhere: a house on this hill that works on the level is worth more than the view it arrives with.
