Book now

Mawbray is a scatter of houses behind the dunes on the Solway coast, a stretch of Cumbria most people drive past on the way to the Lakes. The Retreat is a restored barn standing in it, dog friendly accommodation for eight with two dogs, and a hot outside hose is fitted by the door for bikes and for dogs, which after a day in the sand is the tap that matters.

The utility takes the arrival. Coats, boots and everything gritty stop there, and a shower room opens directly off it, so a soaked dog and a soaked child are dealt with in one place. Past the hall the barn opens into a kitchen, dining space and sitting area under one roof, with bi-folding doors onto the patio and pergola. A pool table and a games room sit at the foot of the stairs.

Two families sharing a pair of dogs is the shape this fits. Four bedrooms upstairs, each on its own animal theme, a bathroom with a freestanding bath beside a separate shower, and somewhere to send the children. Alongside the private enclosed garden the owners have made a second one for wildlife with a bug hotel in it, and the hot tub goes under the pergola.

Mawbray Banks starts where the lane runs out, one of the finest runs of dune on this coast, with open sand beyond it and the Galloway hills across the water. Allonby's long beach lies south, Silloth north with its green and its golf links. Maryport keeps a harbour, an aquarium and a Roman fort above the town. Dogs go loose on most of this shore because there is nobody on it to mind.
