Ty Isaf was a dairy and grain store in the seventeenth century and is now a five star dog friendly stay for two near Llangollen, the one bedroom open to the room beneath it and the stair turning tightly on the way up. Nothing about the building argues for a third person, and that is most of the appeal of it.

The lounge keeps the original bread oven in its wall, with a fire in front of it and sofas either side. A galley kitchen sits at one end, a boot room opposite it, with drying space in it for the coat and the towel that come back from the river, which is where the dog will have been. There is underfloor heating under all of it.

The garden is paved and fully enclosed, a table at one side, borders round the edge and a private hot tub in the middle. One dog and a couple is a small enough party that the whole of it is theirs for the week, and nothing overlooks it. Fishing and a golf course come with the property, shared with the other houses along the drive.

That drive runs a long way out to the road, and beyond it the Ceiriog valley cuts south into the hills, a narrow green line of small fields and one lane that most people miss on the way somewhere louder. Chirk Castle stands at the mouth of it, lived in for seven centuries and still furnished, with parkland a dog can cover properly. Llangollen and the river lie a short way in the other direction.
