The dining table converts into a snooker table, and then into a table tennis table, which says what sort of evening the owners had in mind. Wooden Hare is a five star dog friendly lodge at Finghall on a shelf above Wensleydale, sleeping three and taking three dogs, one per person. The lawn is enclosed, the veranda is decked, and a paddock of Shetland ponies stands over the fence.

Kitchen, sofa and dining are all one room, with glass along the side that faces the dale. A bioethanol fire burns without a flue and without a basket to fill. The super king has a Smart TV, and the second bedroom is a single with a full size trundle beneath, so it sleeps three and a spare. Three dogs on one floor with a veranda door is a very short commute.

The hot tub goes on at six. Below the lodge the last Wensleydale train goes by under its own smoke, which is the only thing that has happened all day and everybody stops to watch it. Two of the dogs are out on the decking. The third is at the fence, conducting a long silent negotiation with a Shetland pony, and losing.

Finghall stands above the lower dale with the fields dropping away from the veranda, and Leyburn sits over the hill. Middleham is where to spend a morning: a ruined Norman castle Richard III grew up in, and around it a racing town where a hundred horses go to the gallops before eight and come back through the square. Dogs watch from the verge, and the moor above is open to them.

Frequently Asked Questions

  • Is Wooden Hare dog friendly?

Wooden Hare is thoroughly dog friendly, welcoming up to three dogs — one per person — at this five star lodge above Wensleydale. The single storey layout means no stairs to negotiate, the lawn is enclosed for safe off-lead time, and the veranda door opens straight out for easy access.

  • Are dogs allowed at Wooden Hare year round?

The listing doesn't specify seasonal restrictions on dogs, but as a dedicated dog-friendly lodge it's designed with canine guests as part of the experience year round. It's always worth confirming directly with the owners when you book, particularly around specific dates.

  • What should I know before visiting Wooden Hare with my dog?

The lodge takes a maximum of three dogs, so it's well suited to a group where each person brings one. The enclosed lawn and veranda give dogs plenty of outdoor space close to the lodge, and the surrounding area is excellent for walking — the moor above Middleham is open to dogs, and the nearby town makes for a rewarding morning out with a sociable dog.
