Blackhall Rocks Local Nature Reserve

County Durham

Dog Friendly Rating:7/10Flower-rich clifftop grassland gives dogs room to roam, above some of the Durham coast's largest sea caves for their humans to explore below.

Blackhall Rocks Local Nature Reserve sits on the Durham Heritage Coast between Hartlepool and Easington, where a magnesian limestone cliff line, laid down some 250 million years ago in the ancient Zechstein Sea, drops to a beach scattered with sea-smoothed pebbles once mined for coal. There is no livestock here, so outside nesting season a dog can enjoy off-lead freedom on the open grassland, though a lead is needed in season and on the steep steps to the beach. This 193 acre reserve was reclaimed after decades of spoil dumping, and the cliffs hold some of the largest sea caves on the Durham coast alongside flower-rich grassland. A 2.5km circuit follows an easy cliff-top path with wide sea views, then drops down steep steps to the shore for those who want to walk the beach. The going underfoot is level on top and can be slippery on the steps and rocks below.

This is a dog friendly nature reserve with a lead requirement during the bird nesting season from March to August, when the cliff-top grassland shelters ground-nesting species. Outside those months there is good off-lead potential on the open cliff top, where the sea air and grassland give plenty for a dog to explore, though care is needed near the cliff edge itself and on the steep steps to the beach. There is no livestock on this route. Two disabled parking bays and a small free car park serve the reserve, with no cafe or toilets on site, so plan accordingly before a longer coastal walk with your dog.
