Caerphilly Mountain and the Ridgeway Walk

Caerphilly

Dog Friendly Rating:7/10An easy dog friendly ridge walk on the long open moorland of Caerphilly Mountain, with sweeping views over Cardiff and the Rhymney Valley.

Caerphilly Mountain is the long whaleback that separates Cardiff from the Rhymney Valley, a 271m ridge of bracken and grass with one of the most accessible mountain walks in South Wales. The Ridgeway path follows the crest of the hill from the famous Caerphilly Mountain Snack Bar towards The Travellers Rest and back, a dog friendly out and back with views to the Bristol Channel on a clear day.

This is a relaxed walk on broad grassy paths and old drovers tracks, much of it on common land where dogs can be off lead well clear of the road. Watch for ponies and the occasional grazing sheep on the open hill. There is no shade so bring water in summer. Both ends of the ridge have legendary roadside snack bars (the Snack Bar at the Caerphilly end is a Cardiff institution) and several dog friendly pubs are nearby. Free parking at the Snack Bar car park or at The Travellers Rest.
