Doddington Hall Estate Walk
Lincolnshire
Doddington Hall is an Elizabethan manor house west of Lincoln, built in 1600 and still lived in by the same family, with a working estate of parkland, ponds and ancient woodland open free to walkers every day of the year, though free-roaming cattle and ponies mean a dog must stay on a short lead throughout. This walk links the estate's Woodland Walk out to Strunch Hill, an area of ancient woodland over 500 years old, with the Nature Trail through Donkey Close and the parkland below the hall, a combined route of around 90 minutes. The ponds along the way were dug for clay extraction and now hold mallards, moorhens, herons and cormorants, and Strunch Hill turns blue with bluebells in spring.
This is a dog friendly walk, though Doddington Hall asks that dogs stay on a short lead at all times, since Lincoln Red cattle and wild Exmoor ponies graze freely across the parkland alongside roe deer. Dogs need to keep a safe distance from all three. There is no off-lead space here, but the variety of parkland, ancient woodland and ponds gives plenty for a dog to sniff at on the lead, and ponds along the route provide a chance to cool off away from the livestock areas. Dogs are welcome downstairs in the Grain Store Cafe and other estate shops, though not in the Hall or gardens themselves. Parking is free, and the walks are open from dawn to dusk.

All dog friendly stays in LincolnshireFrequently Asked Questions
Is Doddington Hall Estate Walk dog friendly?
Yes, dogs are welcome on the estate walks, which are open every day from dawn to dusk with free parking. Dogs are also allowed downstairs in the Grain Store Cafe, so there's a decent pit stop option after your walk, though they aren't permitted inside the Hall or gardens themselves.
Can dogs be off lead at Doddington Hall Estate Walk?
No — dogs need to stay on a short lead throughout the entire route. Lincoln Red cattle, wild Exmoor ponies and roe deer all graze freely across the parkland, so the estate asks that dogs keep a safe distance from all three at all times.
What should I know before visiting Doddington Hall Estate Walk with my dog?
Pack a lead, as on-lead walking is required everywhere on the estate due to free-roaming livestock. The route itself is varied and rewarding — around 90 minutes through ancient woodland, past wildlife ponds and open parkland — and the ponds offer the odd chance for a cool-off away from the grazing areas. It's worth visiting in spring if you can, when Strunch Hill, a woodland over 500 years old, fills with bluebells.
