Dunham Massey Deer Park Circular
Greater Manchester
Dunham Massey is a National Trust estate whose 300 acre deer park has grazed fallow deer for around 800 years, its ancient trees and open grassland surrounding a Georgian house with extensive gardens. Dogs go on a short lead near the free-roaming deer herd, but the level paths and ancient trees make for an easy, gentle loop. This easy circular walk of around 2.9 kilometres follows the park's mini loop from the main car park past avenues of old trees, with regular sightings of the deer herd across the grassland, and links to the Bridgewater Canal nature trail for those who want to extend the walk. The going is level and well maintained throughout, suitable for almost any walker. The house itself, one of the oldest buildings on the estate, has seasonal tours.
This is a good dog friendly walk, but one where the free-roaming deer set the rules. Dogs must be kept on a short lead across most of the park to avoid disturbing them, with well-behaved dogs allowed to run off lead only in the designated North Park area. In the formal gardens dogs are welcome from midday but must stay on a short lead. There's no livestock and plenty of shade under the mature trees, and the Bridgewater Canal nearby gives further walking options. Parking is available at the National Trust car park, and the Stables Restaurant welcomes dogs in its family room.

Frequently Asked Questions
Is Dunham Massey Deer Park Circular dog friendly?
Dunham Massey is a good option for a dog walk, earning a 7/10 on our dog friendly rating. Dogs are welcome throughout the deer park and in the formal gardens from midday, and the Stables Restaurant on site has a family room where dogs are allowed. The main thing to be aware of is that leads are required across most of the estate due to the free-roaming fallow deer herd.
Can dogs be off lead at Dunham Massey Deer Park Circular?
Off-lead time is limited but does exist — well-behaved dogs are allowed to run free in the designated North Park area. Across the rest of the deer park and in the formal gardens, dogs must be kept on a short lead to avoid disturbing the resident fallow deer herd. It's a lead-heavy visit, so worth bearing in mind if your dog needs a good run.
What should I know before visiting Dunham Massey Deer Park Circular with my dog?
The key thing to plan around is the deer — they roam freely across the 300 acre park, so short leads are required in most areas to avoid disturbing them. If you're visiting the formal gardens with your dog, note that they're only permitted from midday. On the plus side, the paths are level and well maintained throughout, the ancient trees provide plenty of shade, and the Bridgewater Canal nearby offers a handy extension if you want a longer outing.
