Firle Beacon
East Sussex
Firle Beacon rises to 217 metres on the chalk ridge of the South Downs Way above the village of Firle, with views stretching to Eastbourne and the sea on a clear day. This 7.9km circular walk, dogs on lead past the free-roaming sheep and Exmoor ponies, starts from the free Bostal car park at the top of Firle Bostal, follows the South Downs Way along the open ridge past the beacon's trig point and a group of Bronze Age round barrows, before dropping steeply off the scarp to Firle village and its 18th century estate, Firle Place, then climbing back to the car park. There is a long, fairly steep descent and an equivalent climb back, on grass and chalk tracks that turn to mud after rain.
This dog friendly walk gives big, open views and plenty of ground to cover, but the South Downs Way here shares the down with grazing animals, so it is not a place to let a dog roam unsupervised: Exmoor ponies are used for conservation grazing and sheep are often let to roam free across the ridge, so keep dogs on a lead whenever livestock is in sight. Away from the animals, the wide grassy ridge gives a dog room to walk, and there is usually a breeze even on hot days, though there is no water or shade up on the open down. Firle village at the foot of the hill has a pub, and the steep descent and climb make this more of a workout than the distance alone suggests.

Frequently Asked Questions
Is Firle Beacon dog friendly?
Yes, it scores 7 out of 10 for dog friendliness. The open ridge of the South Downs Way gives big views and plenty of space, and there is a pub in Firle village at the foot of the hill. The score reflects the Exmoor ponies and free-roaming sheep used to graze the down, which mean dogs need to be on a lead around livestock, and the steep, muddy descent and climb on the main loop.
Can dogs be off lead at Firle Beacon?
Only when no livestock is in sight. Exmoor ponies graze Firle Beacon as part of the down's conservation management, and sheep are often let to roam free across the ridge, so dogs need to be on a lead whenever animals are nearby. On stretches of open ridge away from grazing stock, a dog with reliable recall can have some freedom, but it pays to check ahead before letting your dog off.
What should I know before visiting Firle Beacon with my dog?
The full circuit is 7.9km with a long, fairly steep descent to Firle village and an equally steep climb back, on paths that get muddy after rain. There is no water or shade up on the open down, so carry water for your dog. The free Bostal car park at the top of Firle Bostal is the usual starting point, and Firle village below has a pub for afterwards.
