Glen Feshie Walk to Ruigh Aiteachain

Highlands

Dog Friendly Rating:9/10A dog friendly, gentle river and pinewood walk up Glen Feshie to the iconic Ruigh Aiteachain bothy, one of the easiest bothy visits in the Cairngorms.

This is a classic Cairngorms dog friendly walk for owners who want scenery without effort. From the small Achlean car park the route follows a quiet estate track past regenerating Caledonian pines and along the braided River Feshie, reaching the well loved Ruigh Aiteachain bothy after around six kilometres. You return the same way, which doubles the chance of spotting red deer, red squirrels and the occasional capercaillie.

For dogs this is a near ideal outing. The track is mostly level and easy underfoot, there are no stiles, and open access lets dogs run off lead through the pinewood. Wildwatch matters more than livestock here: deer are everywhere and capercaillie lek in spring, so lead up in April to July if nesting birds are active. Two small stream crossings are normally straightforward but can spate after heavy rain. There are no facilities at the trailhead or bothy, so bring water for both you and the dog. The bothy itself is wood fired and doggy paws are welcome inside.

Frequently Asked Questions

  • Is Glen Feshie Walk to Ruigh Aiteachain dog friendly?

This walk scores a well-earned 9 out of 10 for dog friendliness on Wildpack Collective. The route follows a mostly level estate track with no stiles, the bothy at the end welcomes dogs inside, and the whole glen has a relaxed, unhurried feel that suits dogs and their owners alike.

  • Can dogs be off lead at Glen Feshie Walk to Ruigh Aiteachain?

Open access land means dogs can run off lead through the pinewoods for much of the route. The main exception is spring and early summer — between April and July you should keep dogs on the lead to protect ground-nesting birds, including capercaillie, which lek in the area. Red deer are present throughout the year too, so it's worth having reliable recall before letting your dog loose.

  • What should I know before visiting Glen Feshie Walk to Ruigh Aiteachain with my dog?

The walk is around six kilometres each way from the small Achlean car park, so plan for a 12-kilometre round trip in total. There are two small stream crossings along the route which are usually easy but can run high after heavy rain, and there are no facilities at the trailhead or the bothy, so bring plenty of water for both you and your dog. The nearest toilets, shops and cafes are back at Kincraig or Feshiebridge.
