Kenfig Pool and Kenfig Castle

Bridgend

Dog Friendly Rating:7/10A dune reserve walk for dogs on a lead past a 70 acre freshwater pool to the hidden ruins of Kenfig Castle, buried in the sand for centuries.

Kenfig National Nature Reserve covers 526 hectares of sand dune between Porthcawl and Port Talbot, walked on a lead by dogs throughout to protect the grazing stock and nesting birds. It was designated an NNR in 1989 and a Site of Special Scientific Interest in 2003. At its heart lies Kenfig Pool, a 70 acre freshwater lake and the largest natural lake in South Wales, important for wildfowl and rare dune plants such as the fen orchid, found at only three Welsh sites. This 5.9km circular walk from the visitor centre passes the pool before threading through waymarked dune paths to the hidden ruins of Kenfig Castle, a Norman stronghold engulfed by the dunes, then continues to the Wales Coast Path along a pebble beach with views across the Bristol Channel to Gower and Exmoor. The going is soft on the dune sections, with gentle climbs over the ridges rather than a sustained ascent.

This is a dog friendly reserve, but dogs must stay on a lead at all times because livestock graze parts of the common to manage the dune grassland and ground-nesting birds breed around the pool. There is no off-lead time here, and swimming is not permitted in Kenfig Pool itself, though the beach at the end of the walk gives dogs a place to paddle in the sea. The dune and grassland terrain gives varied scent and the pebble beach return adds a coastal finish. A coffee and cake outlet is near the visitor centre car park, and dog litter bins are provided around the reserve.

Frequently Asked Questions

  • Is Kenfig Pool and Kenfig Castle dog friendly?

Yes, dogs are welcome at Kenfig National Nature Reserve, earning it a 7/10 on our dog-friendly rating. The 5.9km circular walk takes you past the 70-acre Kenfig Pool, through waymarked dune paths to the ruins of Kenfig Castle, and on to a pebble beach where dogs can have a paddle in the sea. Dog litter bins are provided around the reserve, and there's a coffee and cake outlet near the visitor centre car park if you fancy a post-walk treat.

  • Can dogs be off lead at Kenfig Pool and Kenfig Castle?

No — dogs must be kept on a lead at all times throughout the reserve, with no exceptions. This is to protect the livestock that graze the dune grassland and the ground-nesting birds that breed around the pool. Swimming in Kenfig Pool itself is also not permitted, though the pebble beach at the end of the walk does give dogs a chance to paddle in the sea.

  • What should I know before visiting Kenfig Pool and Kenfig Castle with my dog?

Come prepared to keep your dog on the lead for the entire walk, as this is a firm rule throughout the reserve to protect wildlife and grazing stock. The terrain is soft and varied — sand dunes with gentle ridges rather than steep climbs — so it's a manageable route, but worth knowing that sand can tire dogs more quickly than firm paths. Parking is at the Kenfig National Nature Reserve visitor centre in Ton Kenfig, and there are dog litter bins dotted around the reserve.
