Margam Country Park: the Monastic Trail
Neath Port Talbot
Margam Country Park surrounds a Tudor Gothic mansion built in the 1830s on the site of a Cistercian abbey, set within 1,000 acres of parkland below the M4 near Port Talbot, where a deer herd means dogs stay on a lead throughout. The Monastic Trail is one of four waymarked colour-coded routes from the Castle Visitor Centre, a purple-marked circuit of around 4km that climbs the wooded hillslope behind the castle to an Iron Age hillfort and the ruins of the medieval church of Hen Eglwys, with views on a clear day reaching across the Bristol Channel to Somerset and Devon. The park is home to a herd of around 400 fallow, Pere David and red deer, ranging across 500 acres of the grounds. The trail has steep sections on the climb, giving most of its ascent in the first half.
This is a dog friendly park, though much of it, including the Historic Deer Park, Formal Gardens and Farm Trail, is a lead only area to protect the resident deer herd, so the Monastic Trail is best walked on a lead throughout. There is no livestock as such, but deer are present across the grounds and dogs must not chase or disturb them. A few areas, including the Castle Lawns and East Lodge, allow dogs off lead for a run before or after the trail. A dog wash station and dog treats at the on site cafe are useful touches. Dogs are not permitted in the childrens play areas, and parking is pay and display at the main entrance.
