Preston Park, Stockton-on-Tees
North Yorkshire
Preston Park sits on the south bank of the River Tees at Stockton, a 100 acre Victorian estate bought in 1882 by the shipping magnate Robert Ropner, who added the Winter Garden and Music Room to Preston Hall, and the river along one side gives a dog a paddle on a warm day. The house became a museum in 1953 and now displays the Yarm helmet, a rare tenth century Viking Age find, alongside a restored walled Victorian garden that reopened in 2012. A gentle loop of around 2.8km takes in the hall and gardens, the riverside path, and Quarry Wood, a nature reserve at the park's edge with mountain bike trails through mixed woodland. The main field can become waterlogged in wet weather, but the paths around the gardens and river are generally well drained.
This is a dog friendly park in the way most council-run town parks are, with plenty of grass and riverside path to explore, though as with any busy public park it is worth keeping dogs on a lead near the play area, showground and any events in progress. Quarry Wood's woodland paths give more sniffing room away from the main field. There is no livestock on this route. The River Tees runs along one side of the park, offering a paddle for a dog on a warm day, though the bank can be steep and slippery in places. Parking is free, and there is a cafe and toilets near the museum, though their dog policy was not confirmed.

Is Preston Park, Stockton-on-Tees dog friendly?
Yes, it scores 6 out of 10 for dog friendliness. Preston Park is a 100 acre riverside estate with a museum, walled garden and Quarry Wood nature reserve, and dogs are welcome as in any council-run town park. The caveats are keeping dogs on a lead near the play area and showground, and that specific dog policies for the site were not confirmed in detail.
Can dogs be off lead at Preston Park, Stockton-on-Tees?
Off-lead potential is limited on the main field and near the museum, play area and showground, where the park gets busy with families and events. Quarry Wood's woodland paths give some quieter space for a dog with good recall, away from the main visitor areas. There is no livestock on this route.
What should I know before visiting Preston Park, Stockton-on-Tees with my dog?
The park loop is about 2.8km on flat, easy paths, though the main field can become waterlogged in wet weather. The River Tees runs along one side, good for a paddle but with a steep, sometimes slippery bank. Parking is free, and there is a cafe and toilets near the museum, though their dog policy was not confirmed.
