Eston Nab from Flatts Lane
North Yorkshire
Eston Nab is the highest point of the Eston Hills escarpment at 242 metres, its sandstone summit visible for miles across Teesside and, on a clear day, beyond Hartlepool and Peterlee, and its open moorland gives a dog room to range off the lead. The hill carries an Iron Age hillfort built around 700 BC, with boulder walls and ditches still visible, and Bronze Age flint finds nearby point to activity going back to around 6000 BC. A stone pillar at the top, rebuilt in 1956, marks the site of a Napoleonic-era lookout post, and the surrounding hills were mined for ironstone until 1949, laying the foundation for Teesside's iron and steel industry. This 5km route climbs from Flatts Lane Country Park along the Cleveland Way past Normanby Moor, then follows footpaths over Eston Moor to the summit, returning by nearby paths.
This is a dog friendly hill walk over lowland heath and grassland, with curlew, lapwing and green woodpecker among the wildlife the habitat supports. There is good scope for a dog to range on the open moor away from other path users, though a lead is sensible during the spring and summer nesting season to protect ground-nesting birds. Livestock is not confirmed on this route, but the common land nature of the hills means some care is still worth taking. The summit gives sweeping views over the Tees estuary and out to the North York Moors, a fine reward for the climb. Parking is free at Flatts Lane Country Park, with no facilities confirmed further along the route.

Is Eston Nab from Flatts Lane dog friendly?
Eston Nab scores a solid 7 out of 10 for dog friendliness. The route crosses open moorland and lowland heath, giving dogs plenty of space to move, and the climb to the 242-metre summit is manageable for most dogs. Parking is free at Flatts Lane Country Park, making it an easy base for the walk.
Can dogs be off lead at Eston Nab from Flatts Lane?
There's good scope for dogs to range off the lead on the open moorland, away from other path users. That said, it's worth keeping dogs on a lead during spring and summer, when ground-nesting birds like curlew and lapwing are breeding in the area. The common land nature of the hills also means a degree of care is sensible, even though livestock isn't confirmed on this particular route.
What should I know before visiting Eston Nab from Flatts Lane with my dog?
The route is around 5km, climbing from Flatts Lane Country Park along the Cleveland Way past Normanby Moor before heading over Eston Moor to the summit — so it's worth making sure your dog is comfortable with a moderate hill walk. There are no facilities confirmed beyond the car park at Flatts Lane, so bring water for both of you. If you're visiting in spring or summer, a lead will help protect the ground-nesting birds that live on the moor.
