Saltwells Nature Reserve Circular

West Midlands

Dog Friendly Rating: 8/10 A dog friendly woodland and geopark loop through Saltwells National Nature Reserve, with plenty of off-lead ambling through bluebells and old coal workings.

Saltwells is one of the largest urban nature reserves in the country and the jewel of the Black Country Geopark, a mix of ancient woodland, meadows and disused quarries tucked between Dudley and Netherton. The circular route loops through Saltwells Wood and Doulton's Claypit, past the old clay and coal workings that give the reserve its gritty industrial backstory, and is a firm favourite with local dog friendly walkers thanks to its colour-coded paths and mostly flat going.

Dogs can mooch off lead through the woods where the sight lines are open, though popping them back on a lead is sensible near the canal, the main entrance and the quarry edges. Terrain is easy underfoot, a mix of surfaced paths, woodland trails and some rougher sections after rain. Free parking sits behind the Saltwells Inn, which is itself a welcome dog friendly stop at the end.
