Saltwells Nature Reserve Circular

West Midlands

Dog Friendly Rating:8/10A dog friendly woodland and geopark loop through Saltwells National Nature Reserve, with plenty of off-lead ambling through bluebells and old coal workings.

Saltwells is one of the largest urban nature reserves in the country and the jewel of the Black Country Geopark, a mix of ancient woodland, meadows and disused quarries tucked between Dudley and Netherton. The circular route loops through Saltwells Wood and Doulton's Claypit, past the old clay and coal workings that give the reserve its gritty industrial backstory, and is a firm favourite with local dog friendly walkers thanks to its colour-coded paths and mostly flat going.

Dogs can mooch off lead through the woods where the sight lines are open, though popping them back on a lead is sensible near the canal, the main entrance and the quarry edges. Terrain is easy underfoot, a mix of surfaced paths, woodland trails and some rougher sections after rain. Free parking sits behind the Saltwells Inn, which is itself a welcome dog friendly stop at the end.

Frequently Asked Questions

  • Is Saltwells Nature Reserve Circular dog friendly?

Yes, Saltwells Nature Reserve Circular is a great choice for dogs and earns a solid 8 out of 10 on our dog friendly rating. The colour-coded paths and mostly flat terrain make it an easy, enjoyable outing, and the Saltwells Inn at the car park welcomes dogs too, so you can round off the walk with a well-earned drink or bite to eat.

  • Can dogs be off lead at Saltwells Nature Reserve Circular?

Dogs can roam off lead through much of the woodland where sight lines are open, which makes for a really enjoyable mooch through the trees. That said, it's worth putting leads back on near the canal, the quarry edges and the main entrance, where the surroundings call for a little more caution.

  • What should I know before visiting Saltwells Nature Reserve Circular with my dog?

The terrain is generally easy going — a mix of surfaced paths and woodland trails — but some sections can get rougher after rain, so it's worth wearing appropriate footwear. There are no toilets on the reserve itself, so plan ahead, and parking is free in the car park behind the Saltwells Inn off Saltwells Lane, with space for around forty cars.
