Sutton Park Circular Walk, Sutton Coldfield

West Midlands

Dog Friendly Rating: 7/10 A dog friendly circular loop of Sutton Park's ancient woods, heaths and pools, with plenty of space to roam but free-roaming cattle and ponies to watch out for.

Sutton Park is one of the largest urban nature reserves in Europe, a 2,400 acre mosaic of heathland, ancient woodland, wetlands and seven lakes on the northern edge of Birmingham. This circular route strings together the park's best features, starting at Bracebridge Pool and taking in Blackroot Pool, Holly Hurst and the open heaths, making it a properly dog friendly escape that feels much wilder than the city on its doorstep.

Dogs can run off lead across much of the park, but cattle, ponies and deer roam freely so leads need to be on hand whenever livestock is nearby. Paths are a mix of firm gravel tracks and softer woodland trails, with gentle undulations rather than real climbs. Facilities are good at Town Gate and Banners Gate entrances, and Bracebridge Pool has a large pay and display car park that fills quickly on weekends.
