Cannock Chase Forest Trails

West Midlands

Dog Friendly Rating:8/10A Forestry England walk through Cannock Chase AONB with fallow deer, heathland and forest tracks in a surprisingly wild setting.

Cannock Chase is an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty covering thousands of acres of heathland, forest and sandy trails north of Birmingham. This 9.7 km circuit explores the heart of the Chase, following broad forestry tracks through Corsican pine and birch plantation before crossing open heathland where the landscape opens up with views across the surrounding countryside. The 171 m of climbing is spread gently across undulating terrain, and the variety of habitat packed into the route, from dense conifer forest to open heath and mixed broadleaf woodland, gives the walk constant changes of character. The sandy, well-drained paths hold up well in all weather and make navigation straightforward.

This is one of the most versatile dog friendly walks in the West Midlands. The open heathland provides excellent running space, while the forest sections offer shade, shelter and the deep resinous scent of pine that dogs find engaging. Off-lead potential is moderate across the main forest and heath areas where livestock are absent, with the wide trails giving good visibility and space to manage dogs around other walkers and cyclists. The sandy ground is kind on joints and suits dogs of all ages. The Chase supports populations of fallow deer, and their scent runs through the forest rides, keeping dogs alert throughout. Seasonal heather bloom transforms the open heath in late summer. A practical, rewarding walk that adapts well to different energy levels and conditions.
