Wall Roman Site
Lichfield, Staffordshire
A Roman staging post on Watling Street with an inn and bath house, free, on a compact level village site that is easy going with your dog.
This was a Roman motorway services, and understanding it that way makes it far more interesting. Wall, or Letocetum, was an important staging post on Watling Street, the military road running to north Wales, and the road network was fundamental to how the empire was governed. Officials, soldiers and imperial messengers stopped here for the night, and you can see the excavated foundations of the mansio, the official inn, and an unusually complete bath house.
Whilst you trace the changing rooms and the cold and hot rooms in sequence, your dog gets a compact, level, grassy open air site in a quiet Staffordshire village, easy going and rarely busy.
The open air site is free and open during any reasonable daylight hours, with the museum opening on selected days only, so check ahead if you want to see the finds. The site has no published dog policy, so keep your dog on a lead among the excavated walls, where the footing is uneven. There are no facilities beyond the museum's limited opening, and parking is roadside.
