Trelissick Estate and Roundwood Quay Walk

Cornwall

Dog Friendly Rating:7/10Shaded creekside woods give a dog plenty to explore on this National Trust estate walk, with an outdoor cafe terrace waiting at the end for you.

Trelissick is a 300-acre National Trust estate on a headland above the River Fal, where the river widens into the Carrick Roads, and dogs are welcome throughout on a lead, since the parkland is grazed at times. This 7.6km figure-of-eight walk threads through the estate's parkland and woods on both sides of the house, following the creeks of the Fal. The south woodland walk looks down on the King Harry Ferry, one of the few chain ferries still working in England, while the north woodland walk crosses a timber bridge and runs along an oak-fringed creek to Roundwood Quay, an eighteenth century quay beside the ramparts of an Iron Age promontory fort. Paths are footpaths and gravel tracks through the trees, graded easy to moderate, with no stiles and about 150 metres of climbing, including a short, steep pull back up at the end.

This is a dog friendly walk with plenty of shade under the trees and a lot of river smells, though it is a lead walk rather than a free run. Dogs are asked to be on leads in the parkland and woods, and the route rarely meets livestock. Dogs are not allowed in the formal garden or the house, but they are welcome in the outdoor seating area of the cafe, which is open to visitors without buying a garden ticket. There are dog bins at the start and halfway round. Parking is in the National Trust car park.
