Tyninghame, Binning Wood and Smeaton from East Linton
East Lothian
This 8km circular is an East Lothian Council waymarked route linking East Linton with the village of Tyninghame. Dogs can paddle in the Tyne on the way out and explore Binning Wood, though a lead is needed near the farmland. From the square it follows Preston Road past Preston Kirk and Preston Mill, then the River Tyne, crossing by a footbridge on the John Muir Way to Tyninghame Cricket Pitch and the village, where a cafe serves lunches and cakes. The route continues through Binning Wood and the adjoining Newbyth woodland, planted with a mix of tree species and a pond good for bird watching, before returning through parkland via Smeaton Nursery's old walled garden and tearoom. A short signed detour visits Smeaton Lake, an old curling pond especially attractive when the rhododendrons flower in May. Some field-margin and woodland paths can be muddy after rain.
This dog friendly walk mixes riverside, woodland and parkland, giving a dog plenty of variety and scent over a good distance. The River Tyne offers water for much of the route, and Binning Wood and Newbyth woodland give reasonable off-lead scope away from the village and farm tracks. The route crosses working fields and a cattle grid, so keep dogs under control around livestock; the short Smeaton Lake detour is signed for walkers only, dogs on a lead. Tyninghame village and Smeaton Nursery both have cafes for a break partway round. There is no dedicated car park at the East Linton start; use on-street parking near the square, which also has shops and toilets.
