This is a twenty minute stop rather than a day out, and it is free, so treat it accordingly. Acton Burnell is the graceful shell of a semi-fortified tower house built between 1284 and 1293 by Bishop Burnell, Edward I's Lord Chancellor. Parliament was held here twice, in 1283 and 1285, which is remarkable for a building this size and this quiet, and it was abandoned by 1420.

Whilst you look over the standing walls and the fine window tracery, your dog gets the walk in: a gate from the car park and a short wooded path that opens onto a flat grassy site. That combination of shade, level ground and almost no other visitors makes it an easy, low stress stop and a good leg stretch if you are driving across Shropshire.

Practical points matter more than usual here. It is open during any reasonable daylight hours, but the adjacent college closes the gates on the access road at dusk, so do not leave it late. There are no facilities of any kind. No dog rules are published for the site, so keep your dog under close control and pick up after them.
