Wenlock is a ruin in a garden, and the combination is unusual and rather lovely. Its story began around AD 680 when King Merewalh of Magonsaete founded an Anglo-Saxon monastery here for both men and women. It was refounded much later for Cluniac monks, and the Cluniac love of elaborate architectural decoration shows throughout. The finest thing is the chapter house, with its extravagant interlocking round arches carved into the wall arcading, and the lavabo where the monks washed also survives.
Whilst you take in the chapter house and the high standing church walls, your dog gets grounds laid out with clipped topiary yews standing among the ruins, which gives the whole site a calm, ordered feel and means level mown grass and clear paths.
Dogs on leads are welcome. There is parking for 25 cars near the entrance, free for members. There is a café, shop, toilets, gardens and picnic seating. Much Wenlock is a good small town, and Wenlock Edge, one of the best walks in Shropshire, runs along the ridge just outside it.

You need to cross a small road between the car park and the Priory. There’s additional pay and display parking in Much Wenlock, 5 minutes’ walk from the Priory.
