A Bronze Age circle high on Stapeley Hill with views into Wales, on open common where your dog walks the last stretch past a cattle grid.

Position is everything here. Mitchell's Fold is a Bronze Age stone circle set on dramatic moorland on Stapeley Hill, with long views west into Wales and out over the Shropshire hills. It once had around 30 stones and 15 are still visible, standing in rough grass with the Stiperstones ridge on the skyline. Legend says a wicked woman was turned to stone for milking an enchanted cow dry through a sieve, and the circle is the fold she was penned in.

Whilst you take in the circle and the ridge beyond, your dog gets open, unenclosed hill country and about as free as walking gets, with the Stiperstones and Corndon Hill both accessible from here for a much longer day.

Free and permanently open. There is a parking area at the end of the track, and cars are not permitted beyond the cattle grid onto the moorland, so you walk the last stretch. No dog rules are published because the site is open common. That cattle grid is the clue: livestock graze the hill freely, so keep your dog on a lead. No facilities, no shelter, and exposed in bad weather.
