Corndon Hill and Mitchell's Fold
Shropshire
Corndon Hill is a dolerite hill on the Shropshire and Powys border near Priest Weston, its dark igneous rock once quarried for setts and visible today as scree on the eastern slope, best walked with a dog on a lead given the sheep and ponies on the hill. The walk starts at the small car park serving Mitchell's Fold, a Bronze Age stone circle of about 15 stones on the shoulder of Stapeley Hill, and follows a track along the western side of Corndon Hill before climbing to the trig point and cairn on the 513 metre summit. It is a short but steady out and back route of 2.4km with about 197 metres of ascent on grassy paths, with a summit panorama across the Shropshire hills to the Stiperstones, the Malverns, the Clee Hills and, on a clear day, Cadair Idris.
This is a short dog friendly walk, but sheep and sometimes ponies graze the open hill and the moorland around Stapeley Hill, so dogs should be kept on a lead close to the stone circle and wherever livestock is grazing. On the quieter upper slopes and summit ridge, away from stock, a dog with reliable recall can have some off lead freedom. The climb is exposed with no shade and no water on the hill, so carry some for a dog on warm days. Parking is limited to the small Mitchell's Fold car park, which fills quickly at weekends, and there are no facilities on site, though Bishop's Castle, a short drive away, has dog-friendly pubs and cafes.
