A restored cottage for four on a 200 acre family farm at Hookagate near Shrewsbury, with a walled orchard garden enclosed for dogs, a wood burner and two dogs welcome.

Book now

Behind Little Whitley is a walled orchard, and the owners describe it as enclosed so that a dog can roam around it. The cottage was once the staff quarters of Whitley, a farmhouse dating from the 1600s on a 200 acre family farm at Hookagate, just outside Shrewsbury, and it has been restored as a dog friendly retreat for four with two dogs welcome.

The orchard garden has a table and chairs, a sitting out area and a barbecue, and it is where two dogs will spend any hour they are not out walking. A footpath leaves from the orchard itself, running one way to Hookagate, where the pub welcomes dogs, and the other way to Hanwood. There is a courtyard too, a children's play area, and a stairgate for inside.

Downstairs the living space is open plan, with a large wood burner, fuel included, and underfloor heating for dogs who like a warm floor. The ground floor bedroom has a king size bed, a skylight, a double shower and its own door onto the garden. Upstairs, under the original beams, the main bedroom has a super king bed, a freestanding bath and a window that catches the sunset across the farm. It is a couple's place, or two couples', with the dogs sprawled by the fire.

From its raised position the farm looks out to the Shropshire Hills, the Welsh hills and Shrewsbury itself. Lyth Hill, with its open grassland and wide views, is close for a dog walk, and the Severn loops round Shrewsbury's medieval centre ten minutes away. The Stiperstones and the Long Mynd are a short drive south for a full day on the hills.

Frequently Asked Questions

  • Is Little Whitley dog friendly?

Little Whitley is genuinely set up for dogs, with up to two welcome in the cottage. The walled orchard garden is enclosed so dogs can roam freely, there's underfloor heating and a wood burner for them to settle by indoors, and a stairgate is provided inside the cottage too.

  • Are dogs allowed at Little Whitley year round?

The listing doesn't specify seasonal restrictions, and with a wood burner with fuel included and underfloor heating, the cottage is well equipped for colder months. It's worth contacting the owners directly to confirm availability and any booking conditions for your dates.

  • What should I know before visiting Little Whitley with my dog?

The cottage welcomes a maximum of two dogs, so it's worth confirming this fits your pack before booking. The walled orchard garden is enclosed and a footpath leads directly from it, running towards Hookagate — where the pub is dog friendly — and the other way to Hanwood, making it easy to head straight out on a walk. For bigger days out, Lyth Hill, the Stiperstones and the Long Mynd are all within easy reach.
