Caer Caradoc from Church Stretton

Shropshire

Dog Friendly Rating:7/10A short, steep climb for dogs on a lead onto the rocky whaleback of Caer Caradoc, crowned by an Iron Age hillfort with huge Shropshire views.

Caer Caradoc is the sharp, rocky hill that faces the Long Mynd across the Stretton valley, a narrow whaleback ridge of ancient volcanic rock pushed up along the Church Stretton Fault, and a hill walk for fit dogs on a lead given the sheep grazing its slopes. Its 459 metre summit is ringed by the ramparts of an Iron Age or late Bronze Age hillfort, and local tradition makes it the site of Caratacus's last stand against the Romans, with a cave just below the top said to be where he sheltered. This 7.2km circuit from Church Stretton station follows lanes and field paths, crosses the A49, climbs through woodland and then very steeply up grassy slopes to the ridge and the fort, before dropping off the far side on farm tracks with a ford and stepping stones and returning across fields. Allow for around 300 metres of climbing, with several stiles.

This is a dog friendly walk for fit dogs, but mostly one for the lead. Sheep graze the hill and the surrounding fields hold sheep and cattle, so keep your dog on a lead through the farmland and on the open slopes whenever stock is about. The steep grass on the climb is hard work and can be slippery when wet, and there is almost no shade above the woodland, so carry water for your dog on warm days. The stream crossings on the return give a chance to drink. Church Stretton has pay and display parking, cafes and pubs.
