Moreton Corbet Castle

A theatrical Elizabethan mansion shell grafted onto a medieval castle, free, with flat quiet farmland around it and almost no other visitors or dogs.

The south wing is the reason to stop, and it is startling. Moreton Corbet is the product of over 500 years of building: the earliest remains are a stone castle begun around 1200 including a fine gatehouse, but in the 16th century the Corbet family bolted on an enormously ambitious Elizabethan mansion wing in Italianate style. It was never finished and now stands as a roofless facade in a field, all classical pilasters and empty windows with sky behind them.

Whilst you take in a shell of that ambition, which very few English houses survive as, your dog gets flat, quiet, grassy Shropshire farmland with almost no visitors, so an easy, low stress stop and a good place to break a journey.

Free and open. There is limited free parking in the layby next to the castle. Dogs are not covered by any published rules here, so keep your dog on a lead around the standing walls and under close control on the grass, and be aware of the working farm and church next door. There are no facilities on site.
