Grinshill Hill and Corbet Wood
Shropshire
Grinshill is a sandstone ridge rising out of the north Shropshire plain nine miles north of Shrewsbury, its quarry worked for nearly 900 years and its woodland today a good place for a dog to go off lead under the trees. Grinshill stone built much of Shrewsbury, including the English and Welsh Bridges, St Chad's and St Mary's churches and Lord Hill's Column, and the rock here has also yielded fossils of rhynchosaurs, small reptiles of the Triassic. Corbet Wood, the countryside heritage site on the hill, has flint tools from the Stone Age and a viewpoint that looks across Shrewsbury to the Shropshire Hills and the Welsh borders. This 4km family loop from Shropshire Council starts at the free Corbet Wood car park, winds through the woods to the viewpoint, follows sunken bridleways cut into the bedrock and passes close to Clive church on a stretch of the Shropshire Way. Paths are woodland tracks, sandy in places and muddy after rain, with some gentle climbing.
This is a dog friendly walk that suits a short outing, with plenty of shade under the trees. A dog with good recall can have some freedom under the trees, but the old quarry faces are high and have loose stone, so keep your dog close or on a lead near the viewpoint and the cliff edges. Parts of the route skirt farmland, so be ready to use a lead there, and watch for horses on the Humphrey Kynaston Way bridleway. There is no water on the hill.

All dog friendly stays in ShropshireFrequently Asked Questions
Is Grinshill Hill and Corbet Wood dog friendly?
Yes, Corbet Wood is a free Shropshire Council countryside site with woodland paths, and this loop scores 8 out of 10 for dog friendliness. It is short, shady and full of interest, which suits most dogs. The one real caveat is the high quarry faces near the viewpoint, which have loose stone and sheer drops, so dogs need to be kept close there.
Can dogs be off lead at Grinshill Hill and Corbet Wood?
In the woodland on Grinshill Hill a dog with reliable recall can usually be let off, as livestock is not kept in the wood. Keep dogs close or on a lead near the quarry cliffs and the viewpoint, where the edges drop sharply, on the sections that skirt farmland and on the bridleways, where you may meet horse riders.
What should I know before visiting Grinshill Hill and Corbet Wood with my dog?
The loop is 4km and takes a little over an hour, on woodland tracks that are sandy in places and muddy after rain. Parking is free at Corbet Wood car park, reached via Preston Brockhurst off the A49. There are no toilets or cafe on site and no water for dogs, so bring some. Stay well back from the quarry faces, which have loose stones.
