A small abbey in a very good valley. Roche was a Cistercian house, and although the church is largely reduced to footings the transept walls still stand tall and give the site real drama. What lifts it above other modest ruins is the setting: a steep sided limestone valley with rocky outcrops, through which Capability Brown landscaped the grounds in the 18th century.

Whilst you take in the transepts, your dog gets a green bowl of a valley with a stream running through it and cliffs above: enclosed, shaded and level along the valley floor, with woodland walks in the surrounding Maltby Wood and along the stream.

Free and open any reasonable time during daylight hours. Note the inside of the abbey ruins is currently closed for conservation, though external viewing is still possible, so check before a special trip. Free parking for about ten cars sits 250 metres from admissions along a rough path, with closer parking for disabled visitors. Nothing official is published about dogs at this site, so keep your dog on a lead. There is picnic seating but no café.
