The Priory of Our Lady of Thetford was one of the largest and most important monasteries in medieval East Anglia, and for four centuries it was the burial place of the Earls and Dukes of Norfolk, who protected it accordingly. That patronage is why the remains are so extensive: the lower walls of the church and cloister survive across a large area, along with the impressive shell of the prior's lodging and an almost complete 14th century gatehouse.
Whilst you walk the full plan and get a real sense of the scale, your dog gets level, open, mown grass with plenty of room, on the edge of Thetford and free to enter, which makes it a genuinely good regular walk rather than a one off. Thetford Forest is a couple of minutes away and gives you miles of trails.
