A fortified gamekeeper's lodge of around 1400, standing in Thetford Forest, which is superb dog walking country with miles of sandy waymarked tracks.
A building that tells you how seriously medieval England took rabbits. Thetford Warren Lodge was probably built around 1400 by the Prior of Thetford, and it was defensible for a reason: gamekeepers and hunting parties needed protection against armed poachers, because rabbit warrens were extremely valuable and the men guarding them were regularly attacked. It is a squat, thick walled two storey flint building standing on its own among the pines.
Whilst you take in a working piece of medieval estate security, your dog gets the setting, which is the reason to go: it sits inside Thetford Forest, the largest lowland pine forest in Britain, with miles of waymarked tracks, sandy paths and heathland clearings, and it is superb dog walking country.
Free and permanently open, off the B1107 about two miles north west of Thetford, with a brown sign near Thetford Golf Club. English Heritage warn the dirt access track can be rough and is not maintained by them. No dog rules are published. Watch for ground nesting birds and deer in the forest, and for forestry traffic.
