A grand 12th century manor that was never fortified, inside a moat built purely to show off, with Weeting Heath and Thetford Forest on the doorstep for your dog.

Despite the name, this was never a castle. Weeting is a rare surviving example of a grand 12th century manor house, and the moat added in the mid 13th century was not defensive at all but a straightforward display of the owner's wealth and status, which is a useful corrective to the idea that everything with a moat was military. It is built in local flint, and the remains include a substantial three storey tower block.

As you take in the conservation work, completed in 2023 and 2024, which visibly uses new flint and cut stone to hold up the historic masonry rather than pretending to be original, your dog gets a small level grassy site plus the location bonus: Weeting Heath and Thetford Forest are on the doorstep with excellent Breckland walking.

Free and open. The site has no published dog policy, so keep your dog on a lead near the moat and the ruins. No facilities on site. Some visitors find the honest new stonework jarring, so it is worth knowing before you arrive.
