Poldhu Beach

Cornwall

Dog Friendly Rating:8/10A wide Atlantic-facing beach with year-round dog access, proper surf and heathland walking country connecting to the wider Lizard.

Poldhu Beach is a wide, westward-facing sandy bay on the western Lizard Peninsula, historically significant as the site from which Marconi transmitted the first transatlantic wireless signal in 1901. A National Trust monument on the headland marks the occasion. The beach itself is broad and open, with fine Atlantic sand, consistent surf and views out to sea that extend to the horizon. The area behind the beach is managed heathland and dune, rich in wildlife and connected to the wider Lizard heathland system.

Dogs are welcome at Poldhu Beach year-round with no PSPO restrictions, and this is a fine dog friendly beach for owners who want space and surf. The wide Atlantic-facing beach gives dogs serious room to run on firm, compact sand, and the consistent surf provides energetic swimming conditions for water-confident dogs. The heathland and dune habitat behind the beach provides excellent off-lead walking extension beyond the beach itself, with the National Trust land offering good scope. The Poldhu Cove Cafe welcomes dogs in its outdoor seating, and the clifftop walk to Marconi's transmitter site and around to Mullion Cove is one of the best short sections of coast on the Lizard.
