Melville Castle

Edinburgh, Midlothian

Yes. Dogs can stay in selected rooms, up to 2 dogs per room.

A castle hotel on a private 54-acre estate near Edinburgh, where dogs get treats, a Hound Bag of walking kit and the option of a Doggy Afternoon Tea.

At the end of a tree lined drive, on a private 54-acre estate a 30 minute drive from Edinburgh, Melville Castle pairs Scottish grandeur with many original touches. Its 33 bedrooms and suites are each unique, many with four-poster beds. Royal experiences for all is the house mantra, and at this dog friendly hotel it reaches the dogs, two of them to a room provided they are well behaved.

Dog friendly rooms range from the Classic rooms to the suites and must be booked ahead, online or by phone. Your dog is met with some special treats, plus a Hound Bag tote with a tennis ball, poo bags and a map of local walks; comfy beds are limited, so request one when booking, and pack bowls, a towel, food and the favourite lead. Melville's policy doesn't say if your dog can be left in the room by itself, so ask the castle.

The dogs get a tea of their own. Doggy Afternoon Tea comes daily in the Arniston Room or the Peacock Ante Room, though the room can change: a tennis ball to take home, Lily's Kitchen wet food, organic biscuits and a puppichino, booked ahead and best alongside a human Afternoon Tea. On dogs in the Library Bar, home of the whisky flights, the hotel doesn't say, so check first.

In the West Wing, the One Bedroom Suite has a giant copper tub for two, and direct bookings include a Full Scottish Breakfast. The Hound Bag map is a fine place to begin your dog's walking, as is Dalkeith Country Park Estate Trail, one of Wildpack's routes, 0.3 miles off. Longniddry Bents is Wildpack's nearest dog friendly beach, at 9.5 miles.

Facts checked October 2026 from the hotel's own website. Details can change, so please confirm anything important, especially the dog rules, with the hotel before you book.
