North West Castle

Stranraer, Dumfries and Galloway

Yes. Dogs can stay in selected rooms.

A three star town centre hotel in Stranraer with its own indoor curling rink, where dogs can join you to dine in the comfortable Drawing Room.

North West Castle was once the home of Sir John Ross, the Arctic explorer, and today it is a town centre hotel in Stranraer with 73 en-suite bedrooms, a swimming pool and its very own indoor curling rink, long a hub for Scottish Curling. This dog friendly hotel makes a comfortable base for exploring South West Dumfries and Galloway with your dog.

Dogs stay in a select number of the bedrooms, and because those rooms are limited, the hotel asks you to contact it directly so it can allocate a suitable room for you and your dog. Seventy of the bedrooms are in the main building and three in a separate annexe, and room service is available. North West Castle gives no figure for dogs per room and does not mention leaving one alone, so raise both on that call.

The restaurant and the Ross Bar take no dogs, but you're very welcome to dine with your dog in the comfortable Drawing Room. The kitchen works with local and Scottish produce, cooking modern British dishes from à la carte menus at lunch and in the evening, with snacks and light bites through the day, and a full Scottish breakfast comes with selected hotel breaks.

Guests have complimentary use of the leisure facilities: a swimming pool with a poolside spa bath and sauna, a fully equipped gym, and a games room with snooker, table tennis and carpet bowling. Rooms at the front look across the old ferry port to Loch Ryan and Ailsa Craig. Out with your dog, the hotel names the Cockle Shore, a few hundred yards away, among the beaches close by, and the nearest beach Wildpack counts as dog friendly is Ballantrae Beach, 13.6 miles off.

Facts checked October 2026 from the hotel's own website. Details can change, so please confirm anything important, especially the dog rules, with the hotel before you book.
