Kirroughtree Forest: Larg Hill Trail

Dumfries and Galloway

Dog Friendly Rating:8/10The longest waymarked walk at Kirroughtree, with dogs free to roam the forest tracks around Larg Hill and down to Bruntis Loch.

Kirroughtree is the southern gateway to Galloway Forest Park, a Forestry and Land Scotland visitor centre just off the A75 at Palnure, east of Newton Stewart. With no farm livestock here, dogs get plenty of off-lead freedom on the forest tracks, though the trails are shared with mountain bikes and a short stretch of public road. It is well known for its mountain bike trails, but it also has four waymarked walks, and the Larg Hill Trail is the longest of them. This 7km circuit climbs around the wooded flanks of Larg Hill, with views out over Newton Stewart, then drops to Bruntis Loch and follows the course of a tumbling burn back towards the visitor centre. FLS describes firm gravel paths and forest roads with long, fairly steep gradients, a short stretch of quiet public road and some sections that are muddy after rain, and suggests allowing three hours.

This is a very dog friendly forest walk, with no grazing livestock in the trees and long stretches where a dog with good recall can run on the forest roads. Bruntis Loch and the burn give water on the way round, and the conifers and mixed woodland offer shade on warm days. The main thing to watch is bikes: parts of the trail share sections with the mountain bike routes, so call your dog in when you hear riders, and use a lead on the short road section. The visitor centre has parking, toilets and a cafe, which makes it an easy half day out with a dog.
