1 / 8The Steam Packet Inn
Isle of Whithorn, Dumfries and Galloway
Yes. Dogs can stay in all rooms.
A quayside inn in the fishing village of Isle of Whithorn, with six en-suite rooms that welcome dogs and windows looking out over the harbour.
The Isle of Whithorn was once an island at high tide, its quayside joined to the mainland only by a shingle causeway, and the Steam Packet Inn sits right on that quayside. Its windows look out over the harbour, where you can watch the local fishermen and sailors and the daily coming and going of the tides. With the sea on the doorstep, it is a dog friendly hotel for anyone who likes their dog walks with salt in the air.
Dogs are welcome in all rooms, so any of the six en-suite bedrooms will suit you and your dog. Each has both a bath and a shower, and Room 6 is a Super King room with a harbour view, Room 7 a King. Continental breakfast is included for every guest. Two things the Steam Packet doesn't mention are a per room dog limit and leaving yours alone while you're out on the quay, so call ahead about both.
The menu is served in either bar, the lower dining room or the conservatory, and the inn doesn't say which of those your dog may join you in, so ask when you reserve. In the kitchen, the chefs use locally sourced ingredients for inventive dishes and pub classics, from Cullen Skink and Galloway Fish Pie to hot pies from Ballards Butchers and salmon cured and smoked in house.
The hotel has two bars and a family atmosphere, and the rugged coastline, beaches and forest walks of the Machars are all close by. St Ninian's Cave and Physgill Glen, a dog walk Wildpack lists, is 2.9 miles from the quay, and Mossyard Beach, our nearest listed dog friendly beach, is 10.7 miles away.
