Balcary Point and Rascarrel Bay Coastal Walk

Dumfries and Galloway

Dog Friendly Rating:7/10A clifftop coastal circuit from Balcary to Rascarrel Bay, with dogs on a lead taking in wildflower-covered cliffs and an old barytes mine for you.

Balcary sits at the mouth of Auchencairn Bay on the Solway coast, reached by a narrow two-mile road from Auchencairn village. Dogs need close control on this walk, with sheep and cattle in the fields and nesting seabirds on the unfenced cliff tops above Rascarrel Bay. This circuit, described by Scotland Starts Here, climbs the gentle slopes of Balcary Point and then follows the cliff tops west, where seabirds nest on the ledges, to Rascarrel Bay, passing the ruined buildings of an old barytes mine on the way. The return comes back inland past Loch Mackie. The full loop is about 8km with 190 metres of ascent, on grass paths and hard-surfaced paths and tracks with several kissing gates, and there are shorter options from 2.5km for a quicker outing. In spring and early summer the cliff tops are bright with sea campion, thrift, primroses, violets and orchids.

This dog friendly walk rewards a steady, well-behaved dog, but it is a lead walk for much of the way. Sheep and cattle graze the fields, and the route guidance asks for dogs to be kept under close control; the cliff edges are another good reason for a lead, especially where seabirds nest. Rascarrel Bay gives a dog a chance to get down to the shore and Loch Mackie comes on the way back. There is little shade on the open cliffs, so carry water on warm days. Parking is in the car park just past the Balcary Bay Hotel, and the village of Auchencairn is the nearest place for supplies.
