Carstramon Wood and Round the Water from Gatehouse of Fleet

Dumfries and Galloway

Dog Friendly Rating:7/10An 11km circuit from Gatehouse of Fleet through one of Scotland's best bluebell woods, with paths that give dogs plenty of woodland to explore.

Carstramon Wood is an ancient oak wood on the east side of the Fleet valley, gifted to the Scottish Wildlife Trust in 1990 and now one of the largest semi-natural broadleaved woods in the area. Dogs are welcome under close control throughout, with the wood's paths and old charcoal platforms giving them plenty of ground to cover. It is known as one of the best bluebell woods in Scotland, home to red squirrels and pied flycatchers. The Round the Water walk, promoted by the Gatehouse community, makes an 11km circuit from the village. It follows quiet country roads for about 4km past Rusko Castle, an early 16th century tower house, crosses the Water of Fleet at Castramont Bridge, then climbs through the wood on waymarked paths past old charcoal-burning platforms. Allow around four hours; paths in the wood are steep in places, with steps, mud and small bridges.

This is a dog friendly walk, and the woodland half is where dogs enjoy it most. In Carstramon Wood a dog with good recall can have some freedom on the paths, but the Scottish Wildlife Trust asks for dogs to be kept under close control so they do not disturb wildlife, and roe deer are common. The first part of the route is on minor roads, so keep your dog on a lead there. The Water of Fleet gives water near the bridge, and the oaks give good shade in summer. Parking is in the main car park in Gatehouse of Fleet, which has shops and cafes on the High Street.
