Screel Hill from Screel Wood

Dumfries and Galloway

Dog Friendly Rating:7/10A rocky ridge climb above the Solway from Screel Wood, with a forest track for dogs on a lead and fine coastal views for you.

Screel Hill rises only to 344 metres above the Solway coast between Palnackie and Auchencairn, but its rocky ridge gives one of the finest views in this corner of Galloway, looking down over the Rough Firth, Auchencairn Bay and out across the Solway, with the Lake District fells visible on a clear day. Dogs can enjoy the forest track off lead, though sheep on the open hill mean a lead for the ridge and summit. The walk starts from the Forestry and Land Scotland car park in Screel Wood, north of Auchencairn. It follows a forest track and then a signed path up through the trees before emerging onto the open hill and following the undulating ridge for about a kilometre to the summit cairn, returning by the southern slopes. The loop is about 5km with 331 metres of climbing, and the path on the open hill is very rough, rocky and muddy in places.

This dog friendly hill walk suits fit, sure-footed dogs. In the forest a dog with good recall can have some freedom, and on the ridge there is a real sense of space, but sheep may be on the open hillside, so keep a lead ready and use it when you see livestock or in the spring nesting season. There is no reliable water on the route, so carry plenty for your dog, and the rocky sections can be hard on paws and older joints. The car park is free and small, and it can fill at busy times. There are no toilets on site.

Frequently Asked Questions

  • Is Screel Hill from Screel Wood dog friendly?

Screel Hill earns a 7/10 for dog friendliness and is a good choice for fit, sure-footed dogs who enjoy a proper hill walk. The forest track section offers more relaxed walking, while the open ridge provides a real sense of space — though the rough, rocky and sometimes muddy path means it's better suited to younger, agile dogs than older ones or those with sensitive joints.

  • Can dogs be off lead at Screel Hill from Screel Wood?

Dogs with good recall can enjoy some freedom off lead along the forest track section of the route. Once you leave the trees and head onto the open hill and ridge, sheep may be grazing, so you'll need to keep your dog on a lead — and the same applies during the spring nesting season.

  • What should I know before visiting Screel Hill from Screel Wood with my dog?

There's no reliable water source along the route, so bring plenty of water for your dog — this is one of the most important things to sort before you set off. The rocky sections can be tough on paws and joints, so it's worth checking your dog is up to the terrain. The car park is free but small and can fill up at busy times, and there are no toilets on site.
