SCHLOSS Roxburghe

Kelso, Scottish Borders

Yes. Dogs can stay in selected rooms.

A five star estate hotel in the Scottish Borders countryside near Kelso, where dogs get a bed, bowl and treat and long walks by the River Teviot.

Once known as Sunlaws House, SCHLOSS Roxburghe has risen through medieval battles, Jacobite risings and devastating fires, and Bonnie Prince Charlie is said to have planted a rose here. Today it is a five star hotel on a historic estate in the countryside of the Scottish Borders, with a championship golf course and 78 rooms and suites between the historic manor and the newer Estate House. Dogs are welcome throughout most of the property, so much of the estate becomes part of a stay at this dog friendly hotel.

Several rooms are suited to you and your dog, and each dog friendly room comes with a water bowl and basket; on arrival your dog also gets a dog bed and a tasty treat. The hotel doesn't say which rooms are dog friendly. Historic manor rooms have four-poster beds, decorative stucco on lofty ceilings and, in some, grand open fireplaces. Before booking, ask about dog numbers and leaving yours alone, as the SCHLOSS dog page doesn't state either.

Dogs can't join you in Sunlaws, the fine dining restaurant with three AA rosettes and a six course tasting menu built on local ingredients. In some of the hotel's other outlets you can order your dog a selection of special treats from the doggy menu while you eat, so ask which ones when you book.

The spa centres on an outdoor heated infinity pool tiled in jade green, with an outdoor hot tub, an aroma sauna of larch wood and a Finnish sauna set partly into the earth. The estate itself is made for long walks with your dog, beside the River Teviot, around the golf course or through the woodlands, and Kelso and Roxburgh Circular, on Wildpack's map, lies 3.3 miles off.

Facts checked October 2026 from the hotel's own website. Details can change, so please confirm anything important, especially the dog rules, with the hotel before you book.
