1 / 8St Columba Hotel
Iona, Argyll and Bute
Yes. Dogs can stay overnight.
An island hotel on Iona beside the Abbey, with dog towels, water bowls and a fireside lounge where dogs join you at mealtimes.
St Columba Hotel stands on Iona next to the Abbey and the ancient Reilig Òdhrain, built originally as a manse, with the Sound of Iona in front of it. Dogs are very welcome guests at this dog friendly hotel. The island suits them: sacred history underfoot, hardly any traffic, and the unspoilt landscape that surrounds the place.
There are 27 en suite rooms, sea view or back view, with crisp fresh linen, Scottish Fine Soap toiletries and shortbread, and a full Scottish breakfast in the rate. Dog towels and water bowls cover the practical side, which counts after a day on the sand. Which rooms and how many dogs, the hotel does not state, so settle it on the phone.
No dogs in the restaurant, though if yours is to join you at mealtimes the staff will seat you in the fireside lounge instead. The restaurant looks across the Sound of Iona and opens daily for breakfast, lunch and dinner, with produce from the organic garden, locally sourced cheese and meats, and seafood from the water around the island. The bar opens at 11 am, with craft beers, malt whiskies and the hotel's own spirit range, made with botanicals from that garden.
The organic garden has been certified by the Soil Association since 2008 and is open to anyone who wants to walk round it, and the Quiet Garden in the grounds is built for sitting still. You cannot bring a car to Iona: leave it at Fionnphort, cross on the foot ferry, and the hotel will meet you on the Iona side and collect your luggage. Fidden Beach, at 2.4 miles, is the dog friendly beach we map nearest the hotel.
