1 / 8The Little John
Hathersage, Derbyshire
Yes. Dogs can stay in most rooms.
Hathersage's village pub since 1863, where dogs get water bowls and biscuits from behind the bar, and Stanage Edge can be walked from the door.
The Little John has been a pub on Station Road in Hathersage since 1863, named after the outlaw said to be buried in St Michael's churchyard up the hill. A refurbishment kept the oak, the fires, the pool table and the dartboard, and walkers still come off the moor in their boots while dogs sleep under the tables, which tells you what sort of dog friendly inn this is.
Most of the eight bedrooms above the pub take dogs, and so do both self-catering cottages beside it; mention your dog when you book so you're put in a room that takes them. On numbers, the inn's pages don't state a per room limit for dogs, so ask at the same time. Water bowls are standard and the biscuits live behind the bar. Rooms are bed and breakfast, with solid oak bedsteads, botanical paper and walk-in showers among them.
The bar is open to dogs, which means eating with your dog beside you, with cask ale on the bar. The kitchen cooks pub food properly and serves straight through from noon: Peak District pies handmade daily, triple-cooked chips, cod in the pub's own pale ale batter and, on Sundays, a carvery that regularly sells out.
There's a pool table in the panelled games room and a snug worth getting to first. For your dog, Stanage Edge is a couple of miles from the pub and can be walked from the door, and Padley Gorge and Longshaw Estate is 1.3 miles away on Wildpack's map.
