1 The Coach House

Longborough, Gloucestershire

A one bedroom coach house for two at Longborough near Moreton in Marsh, with an enclosed wild garden up sleeper steps from the lounge and one dog welcome.

Sleeper steps climb from the lounge into the garden, which is not the usual way round in a cottage. 1 The Coach House takes two at Longborough, dog friendly, five star, a single bedroom and bathroom, and an enclosed garden sitting above the living room that the owners have deliberately let run wild. One dog comes with it. A garden you climb up into catches the sun almost by definition.

The wildness is a decision rather than neglect, and it suits an animal far better than a lawn does. Long grass, self-seeded planting and corners to disappear into hold a dog's attention in a way mown stripes never manage, and the whole of it is enclosed. The steps themselves are timber sleepers, shallow enough for most sets of legs to manage without help.

Inside is small, finished to five star, and carries a burner, one bedroom, one bathroom and nothing at all surplus to that. It is a week for two who travel with a dog and would rather have a Cotswold village to themselves than a Cotswold town to share. Longborough has a green, a church with Norman work still in it, and an opera house standing in a field.

The opera house is the oddest thing for miles: a full scale theatre built onto the side of a country home in this village, where people drive out from London in evening dress to sit in the middle of farmland. Broadway Tower stands 6.3 miles north west, a folly on nearly the highest ground in the Cotswolds with a view said to take in thirteen counties. One dog gets the tower and the whole escarpment under it.

Frequently Asked Questions

  • Is 1 The Coach House dog friendly?

Yes, 1 The Coach House is dog friendly and welcomes one dog. The enclosed garden has been deliberately left to grow wild, with long grass, self-seeded planting and plenty of corners to explore — far more interesting for a dog than a standard lawn.

  • Are dogs allowed at 1 The Coach House year round?

The listing doesn't specify any seasonal restrictions on dogs, but we'd recommend checking directly with the owners to confirm availability and any conditions around your stay.

  • What should I know before visiting 1 The Coach House with my dog?

The garden is fully enclosed, which is great for dogs, but it sits above the living room and is reached via timber sleeper steps — worth bearing in mind if your dog struggles with stairs. One dog is welcome per stay, and the surrounding area offers good walking, including Broadway Tower just 6.3 miles away on some of the highest ground in the Cotswolds.
