Ballantrae's beach is 500 yards from the door of Ardstinchar Mews, and the ruin of Ardstinchar Castle stands over the village behind it. This is a terraced, dog friendly cottage for eight on the south Ayrshire coast, four bedrooms, sea views, and two dogs welcome with doggy extras in the welcome pack.

Downstairs is a single open room where the cooking, eating and sitting all happen, with a king bedroom and its own shower room off it, which suits anyone, or any dog, who would rather not do stairs. Upstairs are two more kings, one en suite, a twin and a family bathroom, and there is a pool table for the evenings. A family of five who brought their dog found it spacious and easy.

The garden is the thing to know about. It is enclosed, laid out in tiers with seating and a barbecue, and there are four sets of steps down to the hot tub at the bottom, which looks across the field to the sea. Once a dog has learned the steps it has a garden with a view at every level, and the evening ends at the lowest one, looking out towards Arran.

Ballantrae sits on the Ayrshire Coastal Path, and the shore and the path together give a dog as much walking as anyone could ask. Red squirrels, deer, otters and seals all live along this stretch. Lendalfoot's beach is a little way north, and Girvan, with its harbour and boats out to Ailsa Craig, is a quarter of an hour up the coast.

Frequently Asked Questions

  • Is Ardstinchar Mews dog friendly?

Yes, Ardstinchar Mews welcomes up to two dogs. There's a doggy extras welcome pack waiting for them on arrival, and the enclosed tiered garden gives dogs a safe space to explore, with views out towards Arran from every level.

  • Are dogs allowed at Ardstinchar Mews year round?

The listing doesn't specify any seasonal restrictions on dogs, so it's worth contacting the property directly to confirm availability for your dates. Given the cottage's dog-friendly setup and coastal location, it appears designed with dogs as a year-round consideration.

  • What should I know before visiting Ardstinchar Mews with my dog?

The cottage welcomes a maximum of two dogs, and the garden is enclosed, which is reassuring if yours likes to roam. One thing worth noting is that the hot tub sits at the bottom of four sets of steps in the tiered garden, so if your dog isn't confident on stairs it may take a little getting used to. The ground floor also has a king bedroom with its own shower room, which is handy if you'd rather keep your dog away from the upper floors.
