One of the four bedrooms at Arkwrights Manor is not in the house. It is a converted outbuilding standing in the garden, so somebody crosses an enclosed lawn to go to bed and can take a dog along without a second thought. There are two wood burners, one for each end of an evening, and a hot tub out on the patio. Ground level holds a bedroom and a bathroom for anybody finished with stairs, and three steps outside lead up to the door, worth knowing if one of them is elderly or built low. The lawn behind is a proper one, flat and open, and five dogs can go out onto it together without running short of room.
The best hour is the one after supper. Two fires lit, somebody in the hot tub, and five dogs spread across the grass in the last of the light, working out among themselves who is chasing what. Then the slow business of getting everybody indoors, and somebody heading back out across the lawn to the bedroom in the garden.

The hillsides around are steep, wooded and threaded with old paths. Bonsall stands the other way above Cromford, up a lane with a stepped market cross at the top and a serious reputation for hen racing. Five dogs get the woods, which are shaded, quiet and mostly uphill.
