Ashby Cottage

Long Compton, Warwickshire

A two bedroom cottage from 1871 at Long Compton in the Cotswolds, sleeping four, with an enclosed gravelled garden, a baker's oven and mullion windows, and two dogs welcome.

Book now

Ashby Cottage was built in 1871 for the land agent of the Northampton estate, and it still has the baker's oven and mullion windows he would have known. It stands down a quiet lane away from the main road in Long Compton, a Cotswold village in south Warwickshire, and it now takes four people and two dogs as a dog friendly holiday let, with doggy extras waiting on arrival.

Downstairs there is a living room with an electric wood burner and a kitchen with room to eat in. Upstairs, reached by a steep stair, are a king size bedroom, a twin room kept for children and the bathroom. There are three steps between the kitchen door and the drive, which is worth knowing with an older dog.

The garden is enclosed and gravelled rather than lawned, with seating and a table, a tidy secure space where two dogs can potter while the kettle boils. It suits a couple or a young family who want to walk hard in the day and eat well at night: out along the lanes in the morning with the dogs, back to the fire, and the old coaching inn in the village for supper.

The MacMillan Way passes through the village, and Whichford Wood is close enough to walk the dogs to. The Rollright Stones, a stone circle raised around 2000BC, are a mile off on the ridge above, and Chipping Norton, Stow-on-the-Wold and Moreton-in-Marsh are all short drives, with Broadway Tower and Bourton-on-the-Water further into the hills.

Frequently Asked Questions

  • Is Ashby Cottage dog friendly?

Yes, Ashby Cottage welcomes up to two dogs. There are doggy extras waiting on arrival, and the enclosed gravelled garden gives them a safe space to roam while you settle in.

  • Are dogs allowed at Ashby Cottage year round?

The listing doesn't specify seasonal restrictions, so it's worth contacting the owner directly to confirm availability for your dates. As a self-catering holiday let, it's set up with dogs as part of the picture rather than an afterthought.

  • What should I know before visiting Ashby Cottage with my dog?

The garden is enclosed and gravelled, so a good secure space for dogs, but it's worth knowing there are three steps between the kitchen door and the drive, which may need a little thought if you have an older or less mobile dog. The staircase inside is also steep. On the plus side, the MacMillan Way passes through the village and Whichford Wood is close enough to walk to on foot, so you'll have no shortage of good routes straight from the door.
