Boat Cottage is a 300 year old traditional stone cottage in Llangynidr, a pretty village set on the Brecon and Monmouthshire Canal, with canal walks on the doorstep and narrowboats passing through. Its door opens to four guests and three well behaved dogs, a properly dog friendly welcome, and from its windows there are views of the canal and the River Usk.

Inside, it is impeccable and full of original features: flagstone floors, beams throughout and, in the living room, an original coal burning oven still in working order, with the first bag of coal free. A comfy corner seat waits for whoever is first in from a long day of walking, while three dogs stretch out across the flagstones. A flight of original stone stairs, now kept as a feature, adds to the character, and the dining table and kitchen take care of supper in the more modern way.

The exterior is just as much of a winner. The country garden is vast, with plenty of trees and plants, benches throughout and a stone patio with wooden garden furniture and a barbecue for dining alfresco while the wildlife comes and goes. Three dogs will find plenty to investigate among the trees. One side of the garden is edged with a low wall above a sloping drop. The owner rears chickens and ducks, and local produce can be pre-ordered for the stay.

The Taff Trail and the national park can both be reached from the village, and the canal walks give three dogs a fine start to every morning. Tretower Court and Castle is 4 miles away, one of the area's most popular attractions, and Brecon, the market town, lies 10.5 miles off.

Frequently Asked Questions

  • Is Boat Cottage - Llangynidr dog friendly?

Yes, Boat Cottage welcomes up to three dogs, which is the largest allowance you'll find in the valley. The garden is large, enclosed and full of trees with benches set about under them, so there's plenty of space for dogs to settle and explore.

  • Are dogs allowed at Boat Cottage - Llangynidr year round?

The listing doesn't specify any seasonal restrictions, and nothing in the description suggests dogs are limited to particular times of year. It's worth confirming directly with the owner when you book, but there's no indication that year-round stays with dogs are a problem.

  • What should I know before visiting Boat Cottage - Llangynidr with my dog?

The owner keeps chickens and ducks on the property, so it's important to have a word with your dogs at the gate before they get into the garden — the description flags this as the one thing to sort out first. It's also worth walking the garden boundary on your first afternoon, as one side drops away steeply behind a low wall. After that, the garden is genuinely good dog territory, with corners, cover and different spots to lie depending on the time of day.
