Bwythyn Onnen, a traditional stone cottage full of character, sits in the heart of Llangynidr, the village the River Usk runs through beneath its ancient stone bridge. This dog friendly cottage sleeps four, welcomes two dogs and is brimming with original charm, and up a set of steps outside there is a walled, enclosed garden with a lawn, furniture and a pretty summerhouse.

Inside are exposed beams and stonework at every turn. The inviting sitting room has an original stone floor, a lovely dining space and a wood burner set into the original inglenook fireplace, logs included; home from the hills, the two dogs are soon asleep before it while the TV goes on.

The delightful kitchen has a wine cooler, a slow cooker and a soup maker, which between them take care of supper after a long day on foot, and a utility room holds the washer dryer and a WC. A flight of stairs leads up from the kitchen to two charming bedrooms with sash windows overlooking the village, a double with an antique iron bedstead and stone walls and a twin with exposed oak beams, sharing a large, light bathroom under sloping ceilings. Come evening, wine glasses go out to the summerhouse at sundown, the dogs sprawled across the lawn.

From the village the Crickhowell Canal Walk runs all the way to Crickhowell, 5 miles off past the surrounding hills and countryside, a grand outing for two dogs and their people. Myarth, 2.5 miles away, has spectacular views from the summit, and Tor y Foel is there for something more challenging. Llangorse Lake offers kayaking and sailing.

Frequently Asked Questions

  • Is Bwythyn Onnen dog friendly?

Yes, Bwythyn Onnen welcomes dogs — up to two come included with the booking. The cottage is well set up for it too: the original stone floor means anything a dog brings in off the hill isn't a problem, and there's a utility room two steps down from the ground floor where boots and muddy kit can stop before they reach the living space.

  • Are dogs allowed at Bwythyn Onnen year round?

The listing doesn't specify any seasonal restrictions on dogs, and with a stone floor, a wood burner and an enclosed walled garden, it's the kind of place that works as well in January as in July. If you want to confirm availability for a specific time of year, it's worth checking directly with the owner.

  • What should I know before visiting Bwythyn Onnen with my dog?

Up to two dogs are welcome and the setup is genuinely practical — stone floors throughout the ground floor, a utility room to shed wet gear, and a walled garden behind the cottage where dogs can be let out unsupervised. The garden is reached up a flight of steps, so it's worth bearing that in mind if your dog has mobility issues. On the walks front, Tor y Foel is a steep grass hill rising straight out of the valley and takes about an hour at a dog's pace, and the lanes either side of the River Usk through the village are quiet enough to walk in comfort.
