Cariad Cottage is a charming converted threshing barn on a seven acre smallholding near the delightful village of Cwmdu, looking out over rolling Carmarthenshire countryside where you may even spot a red kite or two. This dog friendly barn is a romantic retreat for two people, who may bring up to two dogs, with an enclosed garden and a dog paddock on hand.

Indoors, one light and airy open plan room for lounging and dining has tasteful decor, comfortable seating, underfloor heating and an electric fire in the style of a wood burner, cosy whatever the season. The kitchen is well laid out, and a TV, DVD and CD player keep the evenings entertained. Bring the dogs' own bed or basket and towels, and they will be settled before the kettle has boiled.

The pretty first floor bedroom has a king-size zip-and-link bed, beams full of charm and an en suite shower room. Outside, a good-sized enclosed garden with a patio looks out over the fields, a super spot for eating outdoors with the BBQ going. The smallholding is home to horses, sheep, cats and dogs that guests are welcome to visit, and as it is a working farm, dogs are kept on a lead outside the enclosed area designated for them.

Walkers and cyclists are well served, with nearby trails and bicycle storage at the barn, and Talley Park Walk and its lake make a lovely outing with the dogs. Llandeilo has an eclectic mix of shops and eateries, the Iron Age hill fort at Maes y Castell is well preserved, and Aberglasney Gardens and the National Botanic Garden of Wales, 15 miles away, are both well worth a visit.

  • Are dogs allowed at Cariad Cottage - Cwmdu year round?
